Reaching out in preacher training
The CBT trains 12 men in a 3-year program of classroom studies, practical
application and mentoring. We recognize however, that the church in Haiti needs
hundreds of biblically sound men teaching in the churches. Also, many Haitian
preachers will never be able to attend our program. Some will not be able to leave
their families, gardens, jobs and ministries. Others will not have the education to
complete our program of study. We also believe that Haitians will benefit most from
teaching by a fellow Haitian, who understand the culture from the inside. Because
of these things, the CBT has begun training our graduates and developing materials
for local training throughout northern Haiti.
Objectives
#1 – Develop a curriculum in Creole of 12 Foundational Courses to be used in future
annex schools and for distribution at minimal cost to all those interested.
#2 – Train teachers from among the CBT graduates (and perhaps others) to teach
in local schools scattered throughout northern Haiti.
Dale Huff and David Dirrim will be working together with Haitians and Sunset
International Bible Institute to translate and print study materials in Creole for each
of the 12 courses listed below. (Some of this has already begun). Many of these
courses will be subjects of seminars held during 2006. These seminars will have
three purposes:
· To teach the material to all of the CBT graduates who wish to attend as an
ongoing educational opportunity.
· To demonstrate to to our graduates how the material may be used to teach
others
· To use graduates to assist in translating courses, to seek their ideas for
appropriate stories and illustrations to supplement the materials being prepared,
and to solicit feedback on final drafts of courses in Creole.
Foundational Courses (and their focus)
1. Old Testament Story (General) David
2. Psalms (Theology)
3. Luke (Themes in the life of Christ) Charles Speer/David
4. The Church in Acts (Spirit’s work in the church)
5. New Testament Church (Plan of salvation)
6. Sermon on the Mount (Christian life as a disciple)
7. Timothy and Titus (Character of a leader) –Tex Williams/Dale
8. Minor Prophets - David
9. Moses and David - David
10. Christ and the Powers - Dale
11. I & II Peter - Dale
12. How to Use the Bible - David
Each course will consist of 12 lessons. Each lesson would be expected to take 2-3
hours to teach. Thus, a local training program that operated on Saturday
afternoons or once or twice a week in the evenings could complete a course every 3
months and all 12 courses in 3 years. This could be accelerated or extended
depending on the needs and desires of each congregation.
The goal of this program is not to have men (or women) finish the material and
receive a certificate or diploma. Recognition of completed work may be given, but
the goal in all of this is to encourage Christians to advance their knowledge and
understanding of God’s work and thus prepare themselves for more effective
service in God’s Kingdom. If that is accomplished, the churches will also benefit by
having more mature and capable leaders, which should in turn develop stronger
and more evangelistic congregations.
