John Painter

John has been involved in the work in Haiti since his first trip in 1989.  He was
one of the original board members of the HCF and was actively involved in
purchasing the property and the construction of the CBT.  John's home
congregation, Mountainside Church of Christ in Albuquerque, NM, is currently
supporting graduates Olivier and Phillipe Bolivar and their church and school at
Maziere.

John's Account of the Beginnings of the HCF and CBT:

“Americans involved in Haiti were doing many ‘good works’ such as:  medical
missions, orphanages, water wells, food distribution and mission schools.
However, with the incredible growth of the church, it was recognized that many
churches did not have biblically-sound men preaching the gospel.  Many
individuals, and in some cases entire congregations, had converted from
everything from voodoo to Catholicism to multiple denominations.  There was a
tremendous tendency to mix the truth with past practices.

Many Haitians had repeatedly asked for greater knowledge through the
formation of a school to train ministers.  As a result, in February 1993, during
the annual ‘Haiti Interest Meeting’, an appeal was made to form an ‘exploratory
committee’ to determine what we could do to answer the request of the Haitian
brethren for a school.

A group of Christians with wide backgrounds and talents then met together for
the first time in March 1993 in Euless, Texas.  From that group, we soon formed
the organization which is now called the Haitian Christian Foundation.

We purchased land in December 1993 and broke ground the following spring.

The bottom line:  We saw great growth, a great opportunity, a great need and
an urgent request from the Haitian brethren.”
